Empowering High School Teachers & Students with Music Technology, Aural, and Theory Resources
At Learning Ideas, we specialise in providing top-quality music technology, aural, theory/score reading, and general music skills resources for high school teachers. Initially focused on supporting New Zealand educators, we’ve expanded to Australia, offering online training courses in recording and mixing students’ compositions and performances.
Since our founding in 2002, 95% of New Zealand high schools have used our resources, helping thousands of teachers and students achieve their musical goals.

Learning Ideas was founded by Duncan Ferguson, a passionate advocate for excellence in music education.
Duncan Ferguson, Head of Music at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch, has produced notable performances, including the acclaimed “Stairway to Heaven” (2023) and “Viva La Vida” (2024), which have garnered 4 million views on social media.
A respected contributor to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Duncan develops music technology standards, moderates assessments, and marks NZQA external exams. He also leads professional development courses for educators across New Zealand and is a keynote speaker at major conferences in New Zealand and Australia, such as Music EDnet DAYTiME and MENZA.
As an Apple Distinguished Educator, Duncan has presented at conferences in Berlin, Melbourne, and Singapore. In 2019, he was honoured as Music Teacher of the Year at the New Zealand/Aotearoa Music Awards.
